“The clubhouse is what takes them from being students scattered out in rented apartments and in different departments – and turns them into a community. A place to see football games together and to have Seder night together.
There are groups of Israelis – “tzabbarim” – like those in Italy and Hungary, in Croatia and Latvia, and now, also in Lithuania. Students established a warm Israeli-Jewish corner in Kaunas, with a feeling of community and mutual assistance, with “kabbalat Shabbat” and Kiddush and soup almonds from home. When we sat with them at their clubhouse, at the end of the Shabbat meal, when it was nearly midnight, the heart opened.”
